The idea

Good Work Got Dramatically Cheaper

For twenty years, a professional website meant hiring an agency, and an agency meant paying for a strategist, a designer, a copywriter, a developer, a project manager, and the office they all sat in. The work was good. The math simply never worked for a business with eleven employees.

So small businesses did what anyone would do. They used a template, or a cousin who knew some HTML, or they built something themselves at eleven at night after the books were done. Then they went back to running the business, which is the actual job.

That constraint is gone.

AI has collapsed the cost of production work: research, drafting, layout exploration, imagery, code. The parts of a project that used to consume the most hours are now the fastest parts. What remains expensive is judgment, and judgment does not require a large team.

Second Draft is built entirely around that shift. We are AI-first by design rather than by retrofit, which is why our pricing looks the way it does. We are not discounting agency work. We are doing it a different way.

Xander holds a B.S. in Cybersecurity from Baker University, where he was a Dean’s List student and a Presidential Scholarship recipient.

His coursework and lab work cover ethical hacking, network security, incident response, and digital forensics, backed by a practical foundation in networking and systems administration: Cisco Networking I and II, Windows Server, and Linux I through III.

For his capstone work he built and secured virtual lab environments across Linux and Windows, running simulated intrusion and system-recovery scenarios end to end. He programs in Python, C#, and PowerShell, and writes the technical documentation that goes with the work.

On a Second Draft project, that translates into the parts of a website most small businesses never think about until something goes wrong: HTTPS and certificate setup, hardened hosting and administrator access, sensible password and account policies, dependency and plugin updates, form and spam protection, and a backup and recovery plan you could actually execute under pressure.

Our design team are specialists in AI-assisted production, and the craft now is knowing which tool to reach for, then knowing when to stop trusting it.

Every project needs a different mix: generated imagery for one section and a real photograph for another, motion where it earns attention and stillness where it would only distract, copy drafted quickly then rewritten until it sounds like a person. The team matches the right tool to each of those decisions across graphics, video, dynamic elements, copy, and final polish.

The result is a site that looks considered rather than assembled. Type that holds a hierarchy, spacing that stays consistent from the homepage to the contact form, images that look like they belong to the same business, and interactions that feel deliberate instead of decorative.

Our systems team handles the projects where a website stops being only a website.

That covers ecommerce with real inventory and payments behind it, CRM connections so a form submission lands where your team already works, and integrations with the third-party software you have already paid for and do not want to abandon: scheduling tools, accounting systems, payment processors, email platforms.

It also covers the case where the website is not the problem at all. Plenty of small businesses run on a spreadsheet that four people edit at once, or on a process that lives entirely in one person’s head. Jody Novakoski

Jody has spent fourteen years building product and operations organizations, and the last several putting AI into production inside real companies rather than talking about it in the abstract.

As VP of Product at an education technology company, she grew the product organization from four people to twenty-three and shipped three AI systems that were used every day: an LLM support layer for instructors, a natural-language reporting tool that let partners query their own outcome data without waiting on an analyst, and generative curriculum tooling that cut production time on a single lesson from roughly twenty hours to two.

That last number is the whole thesis behind Second Draft. The same collapse in production cost that reshaped curriculum development applies directly to websites and to the back-office processes small businesses run on.

Earlier she founded a tutoring business unit from zero that delivered at 47 percent lower cost than the vendor it replaced, and recovered a troubled twelve million dollar state education contract, delivering 3,200 lessons in eleven months using 32 percent of the contracted budget. Before that she founded and ran a gamified K-12 education company for seven years.
